Why it matters

Introduced at the 1982 Paris Motor Show, the 308 GTS Quattrovalvole restored much of the performance lost when fuel injection replaced carburetors two years earlier. New four-valve cylinder heads—thirty-two valves in total—allowed the 2,927 cc transverse V8 to breathe more effectively, producing approximately 240 hp in European form while retaining Bosch K-Jetronic injection and Marelli electronic ignition. Its removable black targa panel stowed behind the seats, and the signature louvered sail panels preserved the GTS’s unmistakable open-air profile. A deeper front fascia, additional louvers between the headlamps, an enamel nose badge, power mirrors, Speedline wheels and an optional rear aerofoil identified the final 308 evolution. Ferrari built 3,042 examples before the 328 GTS succeeded it, making the GTS QV far more numerous than the 748-car GTB yet enduringly important as the definitive open 308.
