Why it matters

Introduced for 1980, the 308 GTSi brought Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection and Marelli electronic ignition to Ferrari’s popular open-roof V8 sports car. The transversely mounted 2,927 cc four-cam engine produced approximately 214 hp in European specification—205 PS in emissions-controlled United States form—and drove through a five-speed gated manual transaxle. Its removable black roof panel could be stored behind the seats, while the distinctive louvered sail panels visually and structurally separated the GTSi from the fixed-roof GTBi. Revised seats, instrumentation and console ergonomics improved the cabin without diminishing its purposeful Italian character. The injected engine offered instant starting, smoother running and reduced maintenance compared with the preceding carbureted GTS. Ferrari produced 1,743 examples through 1982, vastly outselling the 494-car GTBi before both gave way to the more powerful Quattrovalvole series.
