Ferrari 348 GT Competizione

Why it matters

Created in 1993 to homologate the 348 for international GT racing, the 348 GT Competizione was the ultimate factory-developed road-going evolution of the model. Based on the improved 348 GTB, it retained the 3,405 cc longitudinal V8 and transverse five-speed gated gearbox, producing 320 hp at 7,200 rpm, but pursued performance through substantial weight reduction and chassis development. Ferrari used carbon-Kevlar for the bumpers, front spoiler, undertray, engine cover, door panels and deeply bolstered seats, while lightweight multi-piece Speedline wheels, revised suspension and competition-derived braking components sharpened its responses. The stripped, purposeful cabin retained the essential road equipment while replacing much of the normal trim with exposed composite surfaces. These changes reduced weight by roughly 200 kilograms compared with a standard 348 and provided the homologation foundation for Michelotto-prepared racing versions. Ferrari built only 50 numbered road cars. Its rarity, factory specification and direct link to Ferrari's return to customer GT competition make the 348 GT Competizione the most significant and collectible production 348.
