Why it matters

Introduced in 1993 as the successor to the 348 TS, the 348 GTS received the same comprehensive development package as the contemporary GTB while preserving Ferrari's removable-roof tradition. Its longitudinal 3,405 cc four-cam V8 gained Bosch Motronic 2.7 management, revised intake and exhaust systems and a higher compression ratio, raising output to 320 hp at 7,200 rpm. The transverse five-speed gated gearbox, dry-sump lubrication and detachable rear subframe retained the 348's unusual T-shaped drivetrain architecture. A wider rear track, revised suspension geometry and recalibrated springs and dampers sharpened the handling, while body-color lower panels gave Pininfarina's straked design a cleaner, more modern appearance. With its roof panel removed, the GTS delivered open-air motoring while retaining the structural profile and compact proportions of the berlinetta. Ferrari produced only 137 examples before the F355 replaced the 348, making the GTS substantially rarer than the earlier TS and one of the scarcest series-production V8 Ferraris of its era.
