Ferrari 365 GT4 BB

Why it matters

First shown as a prototype at the 1971 Turin Motor Show and entering production in 1973, the 365 GT4 BB replaced the front-engined Daytona as Ferrari’s flagship road car. Leonardo Fioravanti’s Pininfarina design placed a radically low wedge over a semi-monocoque and tubular-steel structure, with bodies constructed by Scaglietti. Mounted longitudinally behind the cabin, the 4,390 cc Tipo F102 AB flat-12 used four triple-choke Weber carburetors and dry-sump lubrication to produce approximately 360 hp, driving through a five-speed transaxle. The engine was technically a 180-degree V12 rather than a true boxer, but its architecture and Formula 1 ancestry gave the model both its name and extraordinary character. Only 387 examples were built before the 512 BB arrived, making the 365 the lightest, fastest and rarest of the production Berlinetta Boxers—and Ferrari’s first mid-engined 12-cylinder road car.
