Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider

Why it matters

Ferrari unveiled the open Daytona at the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show, translating Leonardo Fioravanti’s celebrated Pininfarina berlinetta into a striking two-seat spider built by Scaglietti. The prototype wore the early Plexiglas headlamp treatment, while series-production Spiders used retractable headlamps and gained squared upper rear-fender lines that distinguished them from cut-down coupes. Mechanically, the GTS/4 retained the berlinetta’s 4,390 cc Tipo 251 four-cam Colombo V12, six twin-choke Weber carburetors, dry-sump lubrication, rear-mounted five-speed transaxle, independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. With approximately 352 hp and performance approaching 174 mph, it was among the fastest open cars of its age. Only 121 genuine factory Daytona Spiders were completed, making authenticity especially important today because many berlinettas were later converted.
