Why it matters
Unveiled with both transmissions at the 1976 Paris Motor Show, the 400 evolved the 365 GT4 2+2 into a more powerful and polished luxury grand tourer. Pininfarina retained the disciplined long-hood, four-seat silhouette while adding a deeper front spoiler, larger bumpers, five-stud alloy wheels and four—rather than six—round taillights. Enlarged to 4,823 cc, the Tipo F101 C Colombo V12 breathed through six Weber carburetors and produced approximately 340 hp. The 400 GT paired it with Ferrari’s traditional five-speed gated manual, while the 400 Automatic became the first Ferrari offered with an automatic gearbox, a three-speed unit chosen to suit the car’s effortless touring character. Only 502 carbureted 400s were completed before Bosch fuel injection arrived in 1979; just 147 were manuals, making the displayed GT configuration exceptionally rare.
