Ferrari 400i

Why it matters

Introduced in November 1979, the 400i replaced the carbureted 400’s six Weber carburetors with Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection, improving drivability, emissions performance and reliability. Its 4,823 cc Colombo V12 produced 310 hp and was offered with either Ferrari’s five-speed gated manual or a three-speed automatic transmission. Pininfarina preserved the elegant angular 2+2 form while the injected model adopted subtle identification details, including revised badging; a 1982 update brought a refreshed interior, revised mirrors, new wheels and other detail improvements. The 400i remained one of Ferrari’s most sophisticated grand tourers, capable of carrying four adults at sustained continental speeds in exceptional comfort. Production totaled 1,305 cars—422 manual 400i GTs and 883 automatics—before the closely related 412 succeeded it in 1985.
