Ferrari 456M GTA

Why it matters

Introduced in 1998, the 456M GTA was the automatic-transmission version of Ferrari's extensively revised Modificata flagship. Pininfarina cleaned the bodywork, removing the original bonnet ducts while reshaping the nose and bumpers to improve cooling and aerodynamics; a fixed underbody spoiler replaced the earlier deployable device. The redesigned Connolly-leather cabin gained more supportive seats, clearer instruments, improved ergonomics and additional convenience without sacrificing its hand-finished character or genuine rear accommodation. Its 5,474 cc, 65-degree V12 produced 442 hp at 6,250 rpm and 550 Nm of torque, delivered through a four-speed torque-converter automatic transaxle mounted at the rear to preserve balanced weight distribution. Revised suspension geometry, larger 550 Maranello-derived front brakes, electronically controlled dampers and self-leveling rear suspension made the GTA both composed at speed and exceptionally usable on long journeys. Capable of 185 mph, it remained a true Ferrari despite its effortless character. Ferrari produced 650 examples before the 612 Scaglietti succeeded the 456 family. As the final automatic Ferrari to use a conventional torque-converter transaxle—and part of the marque's last pop-up-headlamp series—the 456M GTA occupies a distinctive place in Ferrari's V12 lineage.
