Why it matters

Presented at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 458 Italia replaced the F430 with a clean-sheet aluminum chassis, Pininfarina bodywork and a new generation of integrated electronic controls. Its 4,499 cc direct-injection V8 produced 562 hp at 9,000 rpm—an extraordinary specific output for a naturally aspirated production engine—and sent power through Ferrari's first seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox in a mid-engine road car. The E-Diff3 electronic differential and F1-Trac traction-control system were managed together for faster, more precise responses, while magnetorheological dampers balanced circuit composure with road usability. Deformable winglets in the nose reduced drag as speed increased, complementing a flat underbody and carefully managed cooling airflow. The steering wheel concentrated the engine start button, manettino, indicators, wiper controls and lighting functions around the driver's hands, an approach inspired by Formula 1. Ferrari quoted 0–100 km/h in under 3.4 seconds and a maximum speed above 325 km/h. Named International Engine of the Year in 2011 and 2012, its V8 later received the award's Best Engine of the Last 20 Years honor, helping establish the 458 Italia as a defining naturally aspirated Ferrari of the modern era.
