Ferrari 488 Spider

Why it matters

Introduced in 2015, the 488 Spider was Ferrari's most powerful production Spider at launch and brought the 488 GTB's formidable performance to an open cockpit. Its 3,902 cc twin-turbocharged V8 produced 661 hp at 8,000 rpm and 760 Nm of torque, driving the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Compact twin-scroll turbochargers, equal-length exhaust headers and Variable Torque Management delivered immediate response while progressively increasing torque through the gears. The two-piece aluminum retractable hardtop opened or closed in approximately 14 seconds and was 25 kg lighter than an equivalent fabric roof, while its compact packaging preserved the flying-buttress profile and allowed operation at low speed. Ferrari reinforced the aluminum spaceframe to achieve torsional rigidity comparable with the coupe, then integrated Side Slip Control 2, F1-Trac, the E-Diff and magnetorheological dampers to make its performance approachable. The double front spoiler, divided side intakes, blown rear spoiler and active diffuser generated substantial downforce without an exposed rear wing. Ferrari quoted 0–100 km/h in 3.0 seconds, 0–200 km/h in 8.7 seconds and a 325 km/h top speed. With the rear glass wind stop lowered, occupants could also hear the V8 more clearly even with the roof raised, giving the 488 Spider genuine all-weather versatility without surrendering the character of a mid-engined Ferrari.
