Ferrari 512 TR

Why it matters

Introduced in 1991, the 512 TR was far more than a cosmetic update of the Testarossa. Its name followed Ferrari tradition: five liters, twelve cylinders and the historic Testa Rossa initials. The 4,943 cc flat-12 received new cylinder heads, larger intake valves, revised inlet and exhaust systems, Bosch Motronic 2.7 management and a higher compression ratio, raising output to 428 hp at 6,750 rpm. Ferrari repositioned the engine and five-speed gearbox approximately 30 mm lower, reducing the center of gravity and improving weight distribution. A stronger tubular chassis, revised suspension, larger brakes and 18-inch wheels made the car substantially more responsive and stable than its predecessor. Pininfarina retained the iconic side strakes and extraordinary width but integrated the front bumper into a smoother, body-colored nose, revised the sills and engine cover, and cleaned up the rear treatment. The cabin gained redesigned seats, controls and trim while preserving the exposed metal shift gate and analog character. Ferrari quoted 0–100 km/h in approximately 4.8 seconds and a maximum speed of 314 km/h. With 2,261 examples produced, the 512 TR became the most broadly admired evolution of the flat-12 Testarossa family—visually faithful to the original yet mechanically transformed for the 1990s.
