Ferrari 575M Maranello

Why it matters

Introduced in 2002, the 575M Maranello carried the traditional Ferrari suffix for modificata—modified—because its familiar silhouette concealed extensive development. The 550's V12 grew to 5,748 cc, lifting output to 515 hp at 7,250 rpm and torque to 588 Nm. Revised aerodynamics, larger brakes, a strengthened transaxle and electronically controlled adaptive dampers gave the car greater high-speed authority while retaining its long-distance composure. The 575M was Ferrari's first road-going V12 offered with the electrohydraulic F1 paddle-shift transmission, although a small minority were ordered with the highly prized six-speed gated manual. Pininfarina subtly revised the front bumper, grille, bonnet vents and projector headlamps, while the cabin gained a redesigned dashboard, improved seats and more sophisticated climate and infotainment controls. The optional Fiorano Handling Package sharpened the suspension and steering, and the later GTC package added carbon-ceramic brakes, freer exhausts, unique wheels and further chassis tuning. Capable of approximately 202 mph and 0–100 km/h in about 4.2 seconds, the 575M combined genuine supercar pace with effortless cross-continent ability. Ferrari produced approximately 2,056 examples. It completed the evolution of the 550 platform and demonstrated how electronic chassis technology could enhance rather than dilute the classic front-engined V12 grand tourer.
