Why it matters
Unveiled at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, the 599 GTB Fiorano replaced the 575M with a clean-sheet aluminum structure and the most powerful engine yet fitted to a series-production Ferrari road car. Its 5,999 cc V12 was derived from the Enzo's unit and produced 612 hp at 7,600 rpm with 608 Nm of torque. The rear-mounted six-speed F1-SuperFast transaxle shifted in approximately 100 milliseconds, while a very small number of buyers selected the final gated-manual transmission offered in Ferrari's V12 flagship line. The 599 introduced F1-Trac predictive traction control to a Ferrari production car and combined it with magnetorheological SCM dampers, carbon-ceramic brakes and a steering-wheel manettino. Pininfarina's body used distinctive flying-buttress C-pillars to channel air around the rear glass and generate downforce without a prominent rear wing, while a flat floor and diffuser managed airflow beneath the car. It accelerated from rest to 100 km/h in approximately 3.7 seconds and exceeded 330 km/h. The name referenced its 5,999 cc displacement, Gran Turismo Berlinetta layout and Ferrari's Fiorano test circuit. Approximately 3,500 examples were produced. By combining Enzo-level performance, advanced chassis electronics and genuine long-distance refinement, the 599 became the benchmark front-engined supercar of its era.
