Why it matters
Unveiled in 2017 as the successor to the F12berlinetta, the 812 Superfast revived a celebrated Ferrari name while becoming the marque's most powerful series-production road car of the time. Its enlarged 6,496 cc naturally aspirated V12 produced 789 hp at 8,500 rpm and 718 Nm of torque, with an 8,900 rpm rev limit and a ferocious yet progressive response. Ferrari introduced electric power steering to a production model for the first time, integrating it with Ferrari Peak Performance and Power Oversteer assistance to help the driver exploit the car's limits without muting feedback. The second-generation Virtual Short Wheelbase system used rear-wheel steering to increase agility at low speed and stability at high speed, while Side Slip Control 5.0 coordinated the steering, electronic differential, traction control, brakes and magnetorheological dampers. Active flaps beneath the nose and rear diffuser worked with the bodywork's Aero Bridge channels to generate downforce while controlling drag. The fastback silhouette, muscular rear haunches and four circular tail lamps referenced classic front-engined Ferrari berlinettas in a thoroughly modern form. Ferrari quoted 0–100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, 0–200 km/h in 7.9 seconds and a maximum speed above 340 km/h. As Ferrari's final regular-production front-engined V12 coupe before the 12Cilindri, the 812 Superfast represents a high point of the traditional naturally aspirated berlinetta formula.
