Ferrari California 30

Why it matters

Introduced in 2012, the California 30 was a carefully engineered evolution of Ferrari's first front-V8 road car. Its name captured the transformation: revised exhaust manifolds and engine mapping lifted the 4,297 cc naturally aspirated V8 from 460 to 490 CV, while new aluminum fabrication and construction techniques removed approximately 30 kg without reducing structural rigidity. The front-mid-mounted engine, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and 47:53 weight distribution remained central to the California's unusually broad character, combining everyday refinement with 0–100 km/h acceleration in 3.8 seconds and a 312 km/h maximum speed. An available Handling Speciale package added magnetorheological dampers with faster control software, stiffer springs and a quicker steering ratio, giving the grand tourer flatter, more immediate responses. Its two-piece metal roof still folded in approximately 14 seconds, transforming the 2+ coupe into an open spider while preserving useful luggage flexibility. As the final naturally aspirated development of the original California before the turbocharged California T, the California 30 represents Ferrari's methodical refinement of a landmark model into a lighter, faster and more focused grand tourer.
