Why it matters

Presented in 2014, the California T marked Ferrari's return to turbocharging in a series-production road car for the first time since the F40. Its 3,855 cc twin-turbocharged V8 produced 552 hp at 7,500 rpm and 755 Nm of torque, an increase of nearly 70 hp and 49 percent more torque than the naturally aspirated California 30. Ferrari used compact twin-scroll turbochargers, equal-length exhaust manifolds and Variable Boost Management, which progressively increased torque in higher gears to sharpen response while preserving the rising power delivery expected from a Ferrari engine. A new steering box, revised springs, faster magnetorheological dampers and the latest F1-Trac software made the chassis more immediate, while carbon-ceramic brakes provided repeated high-speed stopping performance. The two-piece metal roof still transformed the car from coupe to open spider in approximately 14 seconds, and its 2+ seating and folding rear backrests retained genuine touring versatility. Ferrari quoted 0–100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 316 km/h. The later Handling Speciale package added stiffer springs, faster damper calibration, revised transmission logic and a louder exhaust. By combining turbocharged efficiency, everyday usability and open-air character, the California T created the direct technical bridge to the Portofino generation.
