Why it matters

Revealed at the 2021 Ferrari Finali Mondiali, the Daytona SP3 became the second project in Ferrari's Icona series after the Monza SP1 and SP2. Its name commemorates the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, where Ferrari sports prototypes finished first, second and third in a carefully orchestrated formation. The SP3's 6,496 cc naturally aspirated V12 developed 840 cv at 9,250 rpm and revved to 9,500 rpm, making it Ferrari's most powerful internal-combustion road engine at launch. Mounted behind the occupants and driving through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, it propelled the car from 0–100 km/h in 2.85 seconds and 0–200 km/h in 7.4 seconds. A carbon-fiber tub derived from LaFerrari technology supported dramatic butterfly doors, fixed seats integrated into the chassis and adjustable pedals. Ferrari achieved substantial downforce without active aerodynamic devices, using floor channels, vortex generators, chimneys through the front fenders and a rear body defined by horizontal strakes. The removable targa roof preserved an intimate connection to the engine and surroundings. Limited to 599 examples, the Daytona SP3 united modern computational aerodynamics with the sensual forms and mid-engined architecture of Ferrari's 1960s sports prototypes.
