Ferrari F430 Spider

Why it matters

Unveiled at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, the F430 Spider was engineered in parallel with the berlinetta to preserve the precision of Ferrari's new-generation mid-engined chassis. Reinforced sills, floor sections and windscreen structure compensated for the open body, while a fully automatic fabric roof folded beneath a sculpted tonneau between distinctive rear buttresses. A transparent engine cover kept the 4,308 cc V8 visible even with the roof stowed. Producing 490 hp at 8,500 rpm and 465 Nm, the flat-plane-crank engine delivered a uniquely immediate soundtrack to the open cockpit. The Spider retained the F430's pioneering E-Diff electronic differential and steering-wheel manettino, coordinating traction, stability, damping, transmission and differential settings. Buyers could specify the rapid six-speed F1 paddle-shift transmission or the exceptionally desirable six-speed gated manual. Pininfarina preserved the berlinetta's oval nose intakes, prominent side openings and Enzo-inspired high circular taillights while reshaping the rear deck around the folding mechanism. The car reached 100 km/h in approximately 4.1 seconds and 310 km/h at maximum speed. Approximately 4,500 Spiders were produced. By combining structural refinement, genuine supercar performance and a roof system that preserved both beauty and usability, the F430 Spider became one of Ferrari's defining open cars of the 2000s.
