Why it matters

Introduced in 1986 for Italy's displacement-sensitive tax market, the GTS Turbo evolved the earlier 208 GTS Turbo with the smoother integrated bodywork and improved cabin of the 328 generation. Its 1,991 cc transverse V8 employed an IHI turbocharger, Behr intercooler, Bosch K-Jetronic injection and Marelli electronic ignition to produce 254 hp at 6,500 rpm. A five-speed gated manual transaxle delivered power to the rear wheels, while dedicated cooling ducts, increased engine-cover ventilation and a subtle roof spoiler distinguished the turbocharged installation. The removable black targa panel stowed behind the seats, retaining the open character and louvered sail panels familiar from Ferrari's naturally aspirated GTS models. Ferrari produced 828 examples through 1989, making it significantly rarer than the 328 GTS and the final open two-liter V8 Ferrari of its kind.
