Why it matters

Introduced for 1985 alongside the Ferrari 328, the Mondial 3.2 received the same enlarged 3,186 cc four-cam V8 with four valves per cylinder. European output rose to 270 hp at 7,000 rpm, while Bosch K-Jetronic injection, electronic ignition and a five-speed gated manual transaxle preserved the familiar Ferrari driving experience. Pininfarina modernized the body with smoother color-keyed bumpers, a revised grille and reshaped front and rear valances, replacing the Mondial QV's heavier-looking black impact structures. New convex five-spoke wheels completed the visual update. The 2,650 mm wheelbase and four-seat cabin remained, retaining the rare combination of mid-engine balance and genuine grand-touring versatility. Ferrari built 987 fixed-roof examples through 1988 before the longitudinal-engine Mondial t brought the series its most fundamental mechanical transformation.
