Why it matters

Launched in 1985, the Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet carried Ferrari's highly unusual mid-engined four-seat convertible concept into a more powerful and visually refined generation. Its transverse 3,186 cc V8 employed four valves per cylinder, Bosch K-Jetronic injection and electronic ignition, producing 270 hp in European specification through a five-speed gated manual transaxle. Pininfarina replaced the earlier Cabriolet's prominent black impact structures with integrated color-keyed bumpers, revised the grille and valances, and added new convex five-spoke wheels, giving the open Mondial a cleaner relationship to the contemporary 328. The long 2,650 mm wheelbase preserved two compact rear seats without sacrificing the model's mid-engine configuration. Ferrari produced 810 examples through 1988, after which the longitudinal-engine Mondial t Cabriolet completed the model family's final transformation.
