Ferrari Mondial Quattrovalvole

Why it matters

Introduced in 1982, the Mondial Quattrovalvole was the decisive technical evolution of the original Mondial 8. Four valves per cylinder—thirty-two in total—helped the transverse 2,927 cc V8 breathe more freely, raising European output to 240 hp at 7,000 rpm while retaining Bosch K-Jetronic injection, electronic ignition and Ferrari's five-speed gated manual transaxle. The 2,650 mm wheelbase preserved the Mondial's unusual combination of mid-engine balance and four-seat accommodation, while the fixed-roof Pininfarina body remained subtly distinguished by Quattrovalvole identification and the red-finished engine intake. Ferrari produced 1,145 coupés through 1985. The QV also expanded the Mondial family: a Cabriolet joined it in 1983, becoming the first series-production mid-engined four-seat convertible and beginning a body style that would continue through the later 3.2 and Mondial t generations.
