Why it matters

Introduced in 1989, the Mondial t Cabriolet gave Ferrari's singular four-seat mid-engined convertible its most comprehensive mechanical transformation. The 3,405 cc, 32-valve V8 was rotated into a longitudinal position and joined to a transverse five-speed gearbox, forming the T-shaped drivetrain that inspired the model's name and closely related it to the Ferrari 348. Bosch Motronic engine management, dry-sump lubrication and a lower engine position helped deliver 300 hp at 7,200 rpm with improved balance and service access. Anti-lock brakes, electronically adjustable dampers, a wider rear track and a redesigned cabin further modernized the car, while Pininfarina retained the elegant four-seat open silhouette. Ferrari built 1,017 examples through 1993, making it the most numerous Mondial convertible and the final road-going chapter of a model family produced for thirteen years.
