Why it matters
Introduced in 2017 for the 2018 model year, the Portofino took its name from the celebrated Ligurian coastal village and represented a clean-sheet successor to the California T. Its 3,855 cc twin-turbocharged V8 produced 591 hp at 7,500 rpm and 760 Nm of torque, using new pistons, connecting rods, intake geometry and a one-piece cast exhaust manifold to sharpen response and improve its soundtrack. An all-new aluminum chassis reduced weight while increasing torsional rigidity, and Ferrari fitted its third-generation electronic differential together with magnetorheological dampers and the first electric power-steering system used on one of the marque's GT cars. The compact two-piece metal roof transformed the Portofino from a true fastback coupe into an open spider, while the 2+ cabin and folding rear backrests provided useful luggage flexibility. Aerodynamic ducts concealed beside the headlamps routed air through the front wheel arches to reduce drag, allowing a clean, sculptural body without large external appendages. Ferrari quoted 0–100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, 0–200 km/h in 10.8 seconds and a maximum speed above 320 km/h. By combining stronger performance, improved packaging and a more resolved design than its predecessor, the Portofino became one of the most approachable ways to use a Ferrari every day without diminishing the marque's grand-touring heritage.
